Discipline

Fighting Our Own Nature

Discipline is a fruit of the Spirit, or in other words it is a characteristic that appears or grows in a person who has surrendered their life to Jesus because that person now has God's Holy Spirit living inside of them. For some of us, discipline is something that may have been entirely absent from our life and now there is some small semblance of it happening in maybe just an area or two of our life. For others, discipline was already present to some degree, and now we see that it's growing and expanding into other areas of our life. Discipline is what keeps our lives from looking like those waves in the ocean, being tossed to and fro by the winds. The waves have no control over themselves. They just happen and build and break and grow and shrink and they go this way and that way. Many people in this world live their whole life like this. Things happen and maybe I'll do this or maybe I'll do that. I don't really know how I will react, so why bother planning. Who knows how I will feel at the time, right? And no doubt, you've heard countless times people tell you, "Well, let's just see how I'm feeling." Their feelings, which constantly change, dictate their lives. When things come up or circumstances change, so do they, based on how they feel about what's happening.

God, on the other hand, is unchanging and faithful, and He desires for us to do things in a certain way and live our lives and react to things in a certain way.  We learn what these things are by studying His Word. If we don't spend enough time in His Word, then how will we know what He wants and how He wants us to live? And don't go thinking to yourself, "Oh, I've read the Bible, so I already know." No. People forget. All the time. Every day. Can you tell me what you learned in science class in 10th grade? Maybe one or two things, sure, but you've forgotten most of it. Perhaps you'll run into something one day that will trigger a memory from that class, but perhaps not. And perhaps you'll run into something one day that SHOULD trigger a memory from that class, and it won't. So, how can we expect to live our life the way God says to in the book of James, when we haven't touched the book of James in nine years? You remember, back in that Bible study group? Sure you probably remember SOME things you learned as you walked through that book in God's Word, but no doubt you've forgotten MUCH MORE than you remember.
This page is designed to explore discipline from God's perspective, walking through the Scriptures and also providing some tools and videos I find along the way in MY life to both help YOU to better understand discipline and make intentional efforts to pursue it (to God's glory) and also for me, because unlike most of you, not only is my memory not very good, but it's damaged. You'll find that this website is equally about helping you and about helping me.

Videos & Tools

Don't let the title fool you. A sister sent me this video in hopes that this woman's thoughts and techniques would help me quit smoking. She even states in her video that she used these ideas to help her do just that. But... she speaks about several things that I think could be helpful in kind of starting a conversation with ourselves about what we do, how we think and are we doing anything intentional to control them? Or are the things we think and do running unchecked out of instinct and habit? This video was helpful just to get me thinking. I hope it helps you.

I would encourage you to think less about specific things and more about the ideas. Sure, she's talking about clutter and shopping. But WHAT IF... we applied some of these ideas to... how we spend time in God's Word? Or... how we engage in the calling He has put on our lives? WHAT IF we applied some of these techniques to OTHER addictions we have that God is calling us out of? WHAT IF we took these ideas and used them in ALL the areas of our lives? Could we become more disciplined in ways we never imagined? Yes. More self-controlled? Absolutely.

Incidentally, I watched this video right after I listened to pastor Tom Luitweiler teach through Exodus 29. If you'd like to do what I did, then you can listen to that sermon by clicking the link below and THEN watch the video.
